Two students identified among flood deaths

Agona Swedru, June 27, GNA – Two students have been identified among the 11 persons who died in last Sunday’s floods at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region.

They are Master Kwame Okore, a form two student of Nyakrom Secondary Technical and Master Mahazu Alhasan, a third year student of Gomoa Dawurampong Secondary/Technical school.

Mr Raymond Tsotome, Agona West Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), told newsmen at Agona Swedru that the deceased who had come to spend the weekend with their parents went to rescue some drowning people in the flood, but got drowned in the process. He said the bodies had been deposited at Our Lady of Grace Hospital at Breman Asikuma for autopsy since vehicles could not reach the Agona Swedru Government Hospital due to the damaged bridge.

A continued downpour on June 20 flooded Agona Swedru and Agona Nyakrom causing the Akora River to overflow its banks, damaging properties and displacing more than 2,800 people. President John Evans Atta Mills and some ministers of state have since visited those areas to see the extent of damage and express their sympathies to the victims. 27 June 10
