The Kumasi Central Market with its susceptibility to fire outbreaks is to be restructured by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
Mr. Maxwell Jummah, the Metro Chief Executive confirmed that plans are far advanced to pull down old structures of the market to make way for new ones. He assessed that about 52 million dollars would be needed to modernise the market.
He added that currently structures around are temporary and in three months they will come out with layout proposals for the construction of the market.
Mr. Jummah said sometimes it is necessary to demolish old structures to make way for a new and beautiful city. He said a taskforce will be set up to ensure that KMA bye-laws are respected and offenders prosecuted accordingly.
Mr. Jummah was speaking on a radio programme at Fox FM. He said inhabitants should exercise the spirit of oneness since the work that needs to be done in the city and its environs is not a one man job. He said plans are in the pipeline to educate the public on the basics of a clean and beautiful environment.
On the tax collection procedure, Mr. Jummah said the mode of collection is outmoded and can be exploited by corrupt officials.
He said KMA has outgrown the usage of typewriters and disclosed that arrangements are being made to computerise the assembly. “KMA is to be renovated and equipped to suit its purpose,” he assured.
