Uphold professional ethics to win patient’s confidence

Akyawkrom (Ash), May 13, GNA – Staff of the University Health Services (UHS) have been urged to uphold professional ethics and work hard to make their services patient-friendly.

Dr Eric Boakye-Agyemang, Ashanti Regional Deputy Director Health in-charge of Clinical Care, said they should be abreast with the patient’s charter to enhance quality healthcare delivery. He was speaking at the close of a two-day workshop on patient safety and medico-legal issues held for staff of the UHS at Akyawkrom in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality.

The participants were drawn from the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba, and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Dr Boakye-Agyemang said the medical profession had in recent times attracted public criticism due to the negligence, malpractices and the unprofessional attitude of some health workers. Dr Yaw Bio, Director of the KNUST Health Services, said the university hospitals and clinics built to cater for students, staff and their dependents are overstretched due to high out-patient-department (OPD) attendances.

The facilities, he said, provided services to about 500,000 patients last year and that the figure is expected to rise in the coming years. He called for the expansion of their infrastructure and equipment to reduce the pressure on the referral hospitals. 13 May 10
