Ho, May 5, GNA – The Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin on Tuesday advised police personnel to cultivate the habit of reading widely, to develop “professional confidence”.
“It is only when you read books that you can acquire knowledge, and when you apply the knowledge so acquired you will get power and be confident in yourself, which will lead you to success,” he said. Mr Ampah-Bennin gave the advice at the opening of a two-week capacity building workshop for selected personnel in the Service across the country in Ho.
He said books such as the Criminal offences Act, 1960, the Criminal Procedure Code, the 1992 Constitution, the Service Instruction and the Evidence Decree among others, must be read often. “You must draw closer to these books to be abreast with democratic tendencies,” Mr Ampah-Bennin said.
He reminded personnel that the police had no more power than that granted by the 1992 Constitution and urged them to respect the fundamental human rights of all persons.
Mr Ampah-Bennin urged them to desist from making unlawful arrests, unlawful detention, torture and degrading treatment of suspects. Colonel Cyril Necku (Rtd), Deputy Volta Regional Minister, commended personnel of the Service for their professionalism. He said government is aware of challenges facing the Service and reassured personnel of government’s commitment to resolving those challenges.
Col. Necku advised participants to take advantage of the workshop to enhance their skills.
