Upper East Region marks International Women’s Day

Bolgatanga (UE), April 11, GNA – The Upper East Regional Programmes Co-ordinator of the International Federation of Women Lawyers- Ghana, has called for an end to inhuman cultural practices such as female genital mutilation, widowhood rites and forceful marriages in Ghana. Mr. David Atinga noted that the country’s laws does not favour such practices, hence the need for people engaging in such acts to be prosecuted.

Mr. Atinga made the call when he delivered a public Lecture on the topic “Women and Environment”, as part of the region’s celebration of this year’s International Women’s Week in Bolgatanga on Saturday. The Programme which was organised by the Department of Women and Children was aimed at sensitising the public particularly women on the need to keep the environment clean and to prevent degradation. Mrs. Bashira Alhassan, Assistant Programme Officer of the Department reiterated the need for equal opportunity to for all sexes to facilitate national development

As part of the activities marking the day, the Department, other women groups and the staff of Zoomlion Company- an environmental sanitation agency, teamed up to organise a four- hour clean up exercise in the Bolgatanga main lorry park. The Bolgatanga Municipal Supervising Officer of Zoomlion, Mr. Desmond Adama entreated the general public not to throw rubbish indiscriminately but should endeavour to put them in dust bins placed at vantage points in their respective communities.
