Accra, March 30, GNA – The Minister of the Interior, Mr. Martin Amidu on Tuesday said government was committed to arrest the development dangers migration posed to the country.
“The issue of migration is an everyday matter, which affects all families, communities and regions,” he said, adding that its effect on government business led to the establishment of the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on Migration.
He said the good aspect of migration in respect of remittances, skills, technology and knowledge transfer needed to be managed to enhance the benefits, whilst the bad aspects like travelling on the desert and stowing-away should be curtailed.
Mr. Amidu was speaking in Accra at the establishment of a Migration Unit in the National capital. Mr. Amidu expressed concern about irregular migration by Ghanaians, saying: “This is unacceptable and government is committed to ensure that this is minimised.”
“Government will however promote legal migration. We are not happy with reports of mishandling of illegal Ghanaian migrants abroad. “Our efforts would be informed by our desire to ensure that our brothers and sisters are respected and treated fairly.” 30 March 10
