Accra, March 30, GNA – The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service would mount special road checks before, during and after the Easter holidays to reduce the high spate of accidents that characterises such festivities.
It has also cautioned motorists to adhere to road traffic regulations and avoid unnecessary speeding, wrong overtaking, drink driving and fatigue driving as that could result in fatal road accidents. A release issued in Accra on Tuesday by the MTTU Commanding Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police D.J. Avorga and copied to Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the nationwide road accident statistics, compiled by the unit in January and February this year indicated that 2,133 road accidents were recorded.
It said 1,996 vehicles were involved and recorded 309 deaths, 1,792 injuries in 213 fatal accidents. The statement did not give corresponding figures for the same period last year and said “even though the current statistics suggest a reduction of road fatalities compared to 2009, the figures are still high and unacceptable”. It warned that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
