Alleged child traffickers arrested at Kpeve barrier

Kpeve, March 23, GNA – A middle-aged woman referred to only as Ama f= rom Apam in the Central Region and Kwame Oboh, a fisherman at Kwamekrom in th= e Volta Region, have been arrested for trafficking a 14-year-old class five=

pupil over whom they were quarrelling. The two were apprehended by the police at Kpeve barrier in the South D= ayi District, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Dogbega, who is in=

charge of the Volta Region Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) told the Ghana News Agency.

Mr Dogbegah said Ama contracted the boy, her son, to Oboh in 2008 fo= r 100 Ghana cedis to serve as fishing assistant over a period of 13 months through Oboh’s wife, Araba Thompson, a friend to Ama. The boy was sent to Kwamekrom where it was his duty to disentangle O= boh’s fishing nets whenever they got entangled in the Volta Lake. He said after the expiration of the contract, Ama went to secure the=

release of the victim but Oboh refused on the grounds that the time was n= ot due. Mr Dogbega said on February 24, Ama went to Kwamekrom with a relativ= e and took the boy away in the absence of Oboh. He said Oboh chased and caught up with them at the Kpeve barrier and= a quarrel ensued between them. Mr Dogbega said police interrogated the two and arrested them.
