Rainstorm displaces hundreds of people at Asuboa

Asuboa (Ash), March 21, GNA – Hundreds of people at Asuboa, a farming community, near Asankare, in the Asante-Akim South District have been displaced following a severe rainstorm that hit the community. A heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds wrecked about 50 houses including school blocks and church buildings. The victims are living with friends and relatives. Mr De-graft Fokuo, the District Chief Executive, has visited the area to assess the extent of the damage and relief items that would have to be sent to the victims.

He said the havoc being caused to property in the area by rainstorm had become a major source of worry and blamed this on indiscriminate tree felling by illegal chainsaw operators. Barely three weeks ago, the Asankare and Atwedie communities, suffered similar devastation. Mr Fokuo vowed that the Assembly would work in closer cooperation with the Forestry Commission to clamp down on the activities of the chainsaw operators.

He pledged the Assembly’s support to the victims and counselled the communities to plant trees to serve as windbreak. Mr Agyekum Boadi, the District Director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), asked the people to carry out periodic maintenance of their buildings to avoid such disasters.
