IGP cautions Station Officers against abuse of suspects

Winneba, (C/R) March 15, GNA – The Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, has asked station officers not to instigate or tolerate any act of torture, cruelty, inhuman or degrading treatment against any suspect.

“Simply put, respect the law and the human rights of all persons,” he urged. “Perform your legal duties diligently and faithfully.” Mr Quaye said this in an address, read by the Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Akanyiri Kampari, at the end of a two-week Capacity Building Training for 140 Station Officers from across the country.

The IGP said there had been growing public concern about the unprofessional manner in which some police personnel carried out their duties, advising that, “As you go back to your station, the Police Administration expects you to be Ambassadors of Change.” He asked them to always remember that the tenets of democratic policing demand that they prevent corruption, eschew all forms indiscipline and demand accountability from the Police Service.

“Station officers must lead their subordinates in the image cleansing campaign that has been launched by the Police Administration,” he directed. Topics treated at the course included Crime Prevention and Detection, Prosecution, Operational Duties, Traffic Management, Media Relations, Record Keeping and Information Management.
