Aflao, Feb 3, GNA – Ghana and Togo have agreed to open an additional entry point along their common frontier near Aflao, security sources in Aflao told the GNA on Tuesday. The sources said the two countries had undertaken separate and joint feasibility studies including visits to ‘Pillar 13’, an unapproved route that has been earmarked as the new crossing point. They said the new crossing point would be for pedestrians only to help decongest the main Aflao/Lome.
The sources said the Field Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces would undertake infrastructure development at the Ghana side of the “Pillar” located off the Diamond Cement Factory to house Ghanaian border officials would oversee entry formalities.
Mr Matthias Homey, Assistant Director of Immigration in charge of Aflao, confirmed the agreement but refused to explain, saying “it was an inter-governmental level decision beyond my capacity to discuss”. Lome locals interviewed hailed the decision and called for its early implementation and that it should not be allowed to die. They said an agreement by the two countries eight years ago to keep the frontier opened 24 hours was never implemented. 10 Feb 10
