NADMO asks public to abide by national building regulations

Accra, Jan. 20, GNA – The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) on Wednesday asked the public to abide by the national building regulations in building and construction.

They should also build earthquake resistant structures by seeking professional advice from geologists, architects and engineers. This was contained in a press release signed by Mr Kofi Portuphy, National Coordinator of NADMO, following last Sunday night’s panic on rumours of an imminent earthquake in the country. It reiterated that earthquakes were natural occurrences that could not be prevented, although their effects could be mitigated if the right things were done.

NADMO urged the public to take a cue from the effects of false reportage on disasters saying it was incumbent on all media personnel to be circumspect in reporting, commenting, discussing and writing about disasters.

It also urged the public to take precautionary measures against natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and windstorms. NADMO advised that in the event of an earthquake, people must avoid standing close to buildings, pylons/poles or on bridges. “If indoors, hide under stable objects such as tables and beds to avoid falling objects. Cautiously move into open spaces after the initial shock and remain outdoors,” it said. Hundreds of thousands of people on Sunday night poured into the streets and open spaces after rumours claimed that the country would be struck by an earthquake.
