PPAG to establish abortion centres next year

Kumasi, Dec. 22, GNA – The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) will from next year establish abortion centres in selected districts of the country to provide comprehensive services and care for women. The Association is currently training midwives, doctors and volunteers to equip them with the necessary skills and competency to provide counselling, family planning and post abortion services to clients.

In line with this, a two-day abortion value clarification workshop for PPAG staff, volunteers and peer educators has been held in Kumasi. Mrs Dorothy Maame Donkoh, the Facilitator, said the objective was to aid the participants to distinguish between assumptions, myths and realities surrounding unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

It was aimed at identifying the values that inform their current beliefs and attitudes and enable them to separate personal them from their professional roles and responsibilities.

Mrs Donkoh said the centres being supported by the International Planned Parenthood Federation would help to reduce abortion related deaths among the youth and promote family planning services in the country. She said the trained midwives, nurses and volunteers would undertake outreach programmes to educate people, especially in rural communities on safe abortion and family planning issues.
