Koforidua, Dec 10, GNA – School vehicles in Koforidua are flouting road traffic regulations to the risk of the children who board them. This was revealed after an operation by the Eastern Regional Police Command on Thursday to check the road worthiness of school vehicles in Koforidua, following a GNA report on the conditions of vehicles being used to transport school children in the area.
All the school vehicles that were checked by the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) on Thursday morning were without road worthiness, insurance cover, fire extinguishers and had overloaded the permitted number of persons.
Some of the vehicles instead of 60 passengers carried more than 157 children.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Stephen Andoh-Kwofie, Eastern Regional Police Commander, said the Road Traffic Regulations Act 683 and Legislative Instrument (LI) 952 and 1605 enjoin drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. He pledged that the Police would continue to ensure that traffic regulations were respected and condemned the reactions from a section of the public that the exercise traumatized school children. 10 Dec. 09
