Welder jailed for 40 years

Kumasi Nov. 16, GNA – Nasiru Mohammed alias “Baba Amu”, a 19-year welder has been sentenced to 40 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for robbery.

He was a part of a seven-member gang who during a robbery operation attacked and inflicted deep machete wounds on the face of a taxi cab driver that has now left him blind.

Mohammed pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Baba Sulemana, alias “Baba Alhaji”, Awal Mohammed, alias “Parman”, Osmanu Adams alias “Ogyam” and Mustapha Issah, alias “Sumaila” are already serving 40 years each in jail for their involvement in the robbery.

Two others known only by their first names as Iddi and Yasir are however, on the run.Police Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah Apenteng told the Court, presided over by Mr. Adjei Frimpong that the incident took place at about 0100 hours on January 23.

Mr Abdul Aminu Yusif, a taxi cab driver, was on his usual rounds had parked the car at the Amakom roundabout to pick passengers.

Police Chief Inspector Apenteng said all of a sudden, Amu and the six others, armed with pistols and cutlass attacked, and robbed Yusif of his cell phone and a cash of GH¢100.

They left him with deep multiple cuts and he was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he underwent a surgery but lost his sight. Mr Abdul, fortunately knew his attackers and gave their names to the police, whilst on admission.
