MP decries poor educational standards at Ablekuma Central

Accra, Nov. 4, GNA – Mr Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central, has expressed worry about the poor educational standards in the area, despite efforts by the authorities to improve on teaching and learning.

He identified lack of commitment and dedication of some teachers as a factor and has therefore injected 30 per cent of his share of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund to reverse the situation. Mr Chaie who made this known at a “Meet Your MP” forum in Accra at the weekend said he had also instituted a sponsorship package for teachers and schools that would perform well in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

The forum brought toge ther opinion leaders and stakeholders in education in the area.

He said two Islamic Schools; Ayahedeen and Ansarudeen would be rehabilitated to enhance the academic performance of the pupils. Mr Chaie noted that the provision of social services was the only way to improve the lives of the people.

The MP called for vigorous public health and civic education to enable the residents to be alive to their responsibilities.

Ms Agatha Ama Dzathor, Headmistress of the Akweibu District Assembly Primary School at Russia told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the academic facility lacks a number of social utility services. She said a three-classroom block was accommodating pupils in primary one to six whilst there were only two toilets facilities on campus. She appealed to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school and build additional three classroom blocks to solve the problem. Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Dansoman, Mr Wilson Aniagyei asked the community to expose criminals to be arrested and prosecuted and also form neighbourhood watchdog committees in the area to complement the efforts of the police.
