Ghartey Hall launches 17th Week Celebrations

Winneba (C/R), Oct. 16, GNA – The Head of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) department of the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Issifu Yidana, has observed that cyber crime remains the most fundamental challenge in the 21st century.

This is because cyber criminals are not easily identified and this makes it difficult to effect their arrest. Dr. Yidana was speaking at the launch of the 17th Ghartey Hall Week celebrations of the University of Education, in Winneba. The week-long celebration is under the theme, ‘Cyber fraud, it’s implications on national development.”

Dr. Yidana mentioned burglary in cyber usage, internet extortion, identity fraud and child exploitation as some forms of cyber crime which were bedevilling the Ghanaian society. He said as cyber crime soars, external and internal confidence towards investment in the economy dwindles. The lecturer urged government to intensify its security apparatus to investigate crime and to abate the phenomenon of cyber crime. The Hall President, Mr. Vincent Amewonye, called for intensive education of the youth to stem cyber crime. Mr. Amewonye advised students to set a good precedence, as the destiny of the nation lies in their hands.

Earlier in a welcome address, the Dean of Students of the University, Dr. Ernest Awanta who chaired the function, noted with concern that crime was becoming rife in society and called for the collective collaboration of all security agencies to fight it.
