Sagnarigu (N/R), Oct. 16, GNA – Mr. Iddi Abubakari, Senior Programmes Manager of ActionAid, Ghana, has raised concerns about high inequalities and discriminations against women especially the rural woman despite a lot of interventions. He said injustices and inequalities were the major root causes of poverty and urged society to desist from such practices against women to give them a better playing field for them to contribute to the development of the society.
Mr. Iddi was addressing a durbar at Sagnarigu on Thursday to mark World Rural Women’s day under the theme; “Rural women at the heart of innovation”. He said the day is celebrated annually to recognize the important role of rural women in enhancing agricultural development and improving food security and eradicating rural poverty among women. Mr. Jafaru Abdul-Aziz, Deputy Director of the Tamale Metropolis, said women must be given education to be able to contribute meaningfully to national development. Madam Asana Imoro, the spokesperson for the Sagnarigu Women’s Group, commended ActionAid for its efforts to uplift women from poverty and called for a better marketing avenue to sell their products. Items showcased by the women included shea butter, batik, tye and dye, smocks, soaps made from shea butter, processed local rice and groundnut paste.
