Committee to investigate Inter-City STC inaugurated

Accra, Sept. 25, GNA – A five-member Committee was on Friday inaugurated by Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Deputy Minister of Transport, to review the current operations of Inter-City STC and come out with suggestions on how to improve the services of the company. The committee, chaired by Mr Noble Appiah of the National Road Safety Commission, has Mr Samuel Quaye, Ghana Maritime Academy, Mr Francis Sey, Ghana Airport Company Limited, Mr Eric Tetteh, Ministry of Transport and Mr A. Mussah of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority as other members.

The terms of reference under which the Committee would operate are to investigate the operations of the Inter-City STC since 2000; investigate the circumstances that led to the termination of engagement with VANEF STC and losses associated with it; investigate the circumstances leading to the recent impasse between Inter-City STC and SVANI and its cost implications, and any other matters and recommendation.

Mrs Attivor said the Committee had to submit its reports to the Ministry within eight weeks. She explained that the rationale for setting up the committee was not borne out of malice or witch-hunting, “but to ensure that the Inter-City STC is put on its right footing to make its operations viable and sustainable for the benefit of the public”. According to her, a cursory look at the country’s road transport services painted a not too satisfactory picture, with Inter-City STC, one of the leading companies in the sector, facing numerous challenges including aged and dilapidated infrastructure, obsolete tools and equipment, and inadequate number of buses. Mrs Attivor said all these call for further investigations. Mr Appiah gave the assurance that members of the committee work within the terms of reference and to come out with decisions that would help improve the services of the company. 25 Sept. 09
