Non-Formal Functional Literacy for 472 adults in Kwaebibirem District

Abaam (E/R), Sept. 6, GNA – Four hundred and seventy- two adult learners are currently being trained in Non-Formal Functional Literacy in the Kwaebibirem District.

According to Miss Patricia Ansah, District Co-ordinator of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education, the district had trained many adults, some of whom are now opinion leaders in their communities serving as Catechist, Presiding Elders of Churches and community leaders. Miss Ansah was speaking to newsmen after leading a large number of adult learners and assembly members, to undertake a three-hour clean-up exercise as part of the celebrations marking Literacy day at Abaam near Kade. Mr George Agyemang Duah, District Chief Executive of the area, also took part in the exercise.

She said one of the objectives of the Non-Formal Functional Literacy programme was to train the adults on how to engage in income generating activities, such as snail rearing, palm oil extraction, rabbit rearing and rice cultivation.

Mr Agyemang Duah said the district assembly would support the NFED to train the adult learners to become functional literates and to acquire useful skills that would enable them to generate income. Mr Duah advised the adult learners to ensure that sanitation in their communities was reduced to prevent diseases. A five-member Abaam community literacy advisory committee was also inaugurated.
