NGO Grants Loans to Literacy Classes

The Hunger Project Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has disbursed 10,000 dollars to 24 literacy classes in the Eastern and Central regions to undertake income-generating activities to eliminate hunger and poverty in the community.

The projects include batik and tie and die making, poultry and snail rearing, food crop and pineapple cultivation and fish farming.

Dr Naana Agyemang Mensah, Country Director of the Hunger Project announced this when addressed a literacy fun day celebration for 11 literacy classes in the Kwahu-South District at Kwaman.

She said with the functional literacy education, the beneficiaries of the loans could manage the project efficiently to enhance their living standards.

The hunger project would also give skills training and supply inputs to members of the classes and traditional birth attendants to equip them to use their initiative to eradicate hunger and poverty in the society.

Mr Emmanuel Addrah, Eastern Regional Director of Non-Formal Education Division (NFED), said the region has turned out 150,487 literate adults under the programme, out of which 8,750 made up of 2,917 males and 5,833 females come from the district.

He said a literate youth, who came out of the pilot English project class in the district is now attending Abetico Demonstration Junior Secondary School at Abetefi.
