Liberians resident in Kumasi on Monday condemned attacks on the offices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) housing personnel of police the Ghana National Fire Service at Budumburam in the Central Region by their colleagues last Saturday.
The refugees vandalised the offices, destroyed and looted property worth millions of cedis.
They reminded their colleagues all over the country that they are foreigners and must respect and abide by the laws of the Republic of Ghana.
This was contained in a press release signed by Mr Amos Gibson and Mrs Marie Richards, spokespersons for the refugees, in Kumasi. They said it was unfortunate that the Liberian refugees at Budumburam Camp attacked the police and for not allowing the law to take its course.
They called on the authorities to deal with all those who took the law into their hands and went on the rampage, destroying the living quarters of the police and firemen at the camp.
The Liberians said Ghana is a peaceful nation and all foreigners in the country must promote a peaceful atmosphere in the country. They expressed the hope that Ghanaians would not use this unfortunate incident of some misguided refugees to end their hospitality, especially towards Liberians in Ghana.
Whilst condemning their colleagues, Liberians in Kumasi commended the police in the Central Region for the professional manner they handled the situation. Liberian refugees at Budumburam Camp last Saturday attacked the offices and freed a number of suspects being held in police cells.
The Liberians attacked the police for refusing to hand over to them a Ghanaian suspected to have stabbed a Liberian in the stomach at the camp.
