EU assists in sanitation project at Batume-Junction

Batume-Junction (V/R), Aug. 20, GNA – A vault chamber toilet has been built under the EU-Micro Project at Batume-Junction, a busy border community in the Adaklu-Anyigbe District said to record a lot of sanitation related sicknesses. The project is one of the 185 undertaken in the Volta during the project period from June 2006 to June 2009.

Mr Bright Ahadzi, Principal Environmental Health Assistant in the area told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday that the facility, the only public one in the area, would give a boost to sanitation management. He said the community has a population of about 500 people and scores of travellers crossing in and out of Ghana everyday, creating sanitation challenges.

Mr Robert Buatsi, Volta Regional Zonal Coordinator of EU Micro-Projects stated that the provision of infrastructure was not the end of the partnership. He said the beneficiary communities and their various assemblies were expected to ensure the maintenance of the facilities Mr Buatsi said a total of 904 infrastructural projects were undertaken nationwide under the 6th Micro-Projects programmes. He said under the deal beneficiary communities and their assemblies bore 25 percent of the cost to show their commitment while the EU took up the remaining 75 percent.

Mr Michael Kobla Adzaho, District Chief Executive of Adaklu-Anyigbe commended the EU for the support and said the Assembly was prepared to partner it to bring more development to the District. The Adaklu-Anyigbe District had a total of nine projects comprising school blocks, health facilities and sanitation enhancement facilities.
