Students advised not to look down on Vocational/Technical education

Apam C/R), Aug. 2, GNA – The Gomoa West District Director of Education, Mrs Beatrice Lokko, has advised Junior High School students not to look down on Technical and Vocational education because they play a good role in a country’s industrialization advancement.

Mrs Lokko was addressing the second year students from eight private Junior High Schools from Apam, Mumford and Gomoa Dago at a career selection counselling workshop at Apam. It was sponsored by the Gomoa West District branch of the Ghana National Association of Private schools. The workshop was to educate the students on the various avenues available for one to enter not only into academic professions but also technical and vocational studies as apprentices in areas like fitting, spraying and graphic arts.

Mrs Lokko said most students who do not pass the Basic Education certificate Examination (BECE) or are unable to enter senior high schools “just sit at home, thinking that they cannot do anything anymore”. The Director said such students can re-sit the exams again or enter vocational institutions as apprentices. She however advised the students to take their BECE examination very seriously and ensure that they pass creditably because that is the foundation for all learning.

Mr Jude Amankrah of the Kings Technical and Vocational Institute at Apam called on parents and guardians in the various communities to help students who have the desire to pursue technical and vocational training to achieve their dreams.

The Proprietor of the Apam Royal Preparatory School, Mr Hayford Quaye, who chaired the function, advised the students not to misbehave during leavers day cerebration that follow immediately after writing their final examination by smoking, drinking and involving in other immoral acts.
