Philanthropist donates items worth GH¢5,000.00 to School

Karimenga (N/R), July 10, GNA – Miss Lea Kortland, a philanthropist from Rotterdam in Holland on Thursday donated learning and teaching materials valued over GH¢ 5,000.00 to the Karimenga Presbyterian primary school in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region. The items included stationery, exercise and text books, pens, pencils and a quantity of used second hand clothing for both adults and children.

Mr. Kwaku Passah, Chief Executive Officer of Galaxy Tours Limited, who presented the items on behalf of Miss Kortland, said the philanthropist who was a tourist to the region noticed the deprived nature of the school and decided to assist. He said Miss Kortland also chose the school because it was an “orphaned” one situated between the Northern and Upper East Region and therefore did not get the needed attention from the educational authorities.

Mr. Passah said Miss Kortland with the assistance of friends in Holland mobilized themselves and purchase the items for the school, adding that, Galaxy Tours has also made similar donations to the school. The three classroom block of the Karimenga Primary School which has Mr. Alhassan Inusah Tia, as the Headmaster, was established in 1990 and has a population of 131 pupils made up of 87 girls and 44 boys. Mr. Tia appealed for the establishment of a Junior High School in the area to absorb the products of the school and the nearby communities such as Gbewu, Kurugu, Kuluga and Kparaperi.

He said since the establishment of the school, it has produced a nurse with two others attending a vocational school. Mr. Akojoreh Wewugu, Chairman of the School Management Team, said since the assistance from Miss Kortland and Galaxy Tours began, the school has seen significant increases in enrolment figures, since the children were now motivated to attend school. He said the teachers were hard working and there had also been an improvement in the academic performance of the pupils.
