Official predicts bumper food crop harvest

Sunyani, June 29, GNA – Mr. Emmanuel Asante-Krobea, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Agriculture, has said the region might record abundant food harvest this year following favourable weather conditions.

He told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that there was no crop failure in 2008 because weather conditions were relatively good for farming, stressing all things being equal the trend would be repeated. He said rainfall in the Savanna zone was below average and that affected the cultivation of some crops, particularly maize and cowpea. Mr. Noah Kwasi Asare, acting Regional Meteorological Officer, said there were signs the nation might reap abundant food crop harvest this year.

“There has been a traditional belief in the country that successful and abundant harvest of maize is solution to hunger but maize has not been the only food crop in recent years since early harvest of yam in the first and second weeks of June also indicated a guarantee of food security for the country.” Mr. Asare said though maize and cowpea cultivation in the Savanna zone did not do well due to below average rainfall in the major farming season that did not affect yam production because it required only a moderate amount of rainfall with good distribution to ensure plentiful harvest once the planting was done as early as mid-November. 29 June 09
