Health Workers to resist removal of CEO

Tamale, June 22, GNA – The Ghana Medical Association and the Health Workers’ Group of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) Monday said they would resist any attempt to remove from office the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Dr. Ken Sagoe.

“We will no longer sit aloof to watch the chronic change of any good leadership of this hospital to satisfy the selfish and parochial interest of a few disgruntled individuals”.

Mr Misbao Muhammed, a representative of the National Executive Committee of the Health Workers’ Union (HWU), was addressing a press conference in Tamale on Monday.

He was reacting to a group calling itself the “Concerned Workers of Tamale Teaching Hospital” who had earlier called for the immediate removal of the CEO of the hospital.

Mr. Muhammed said: “We unequivocally disclaim the existence of any group calling itself the Concerned Workers of the Tamale Teaching Hospital”.

He said under the leadership of Dr. Sagoe, the staff strength of the hospital had improved from 20 doctors to 53, the number of nurses had jumped from 272 to 360 and pharmacists from 13 to 18.

In addition, he said there are now five services administrators and 17 laboratory technicians.

He said the alarming rate of malaria and infant mortality at the hospital had drastically reduc ed due to the regular clinical review meetings by the CEO. Mr Muhammed said Dr Sagoe had made relentless efforts for the accreditation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital to link up with the University for Development Studies (UDS) and train students of the university’s medical school. The Union noted that the hospital now had one of the best state-of-the-art laundries in the country, a standby generator and it could provide radiography service, which was hitherto not available. It urged all staff to remain calm and go about their normal duties professionally. 22 June 09
