Northern Regional Police command rejects police station

Kusawgu (N/R), June 19, GNA – The Northern Regional Police Command has refused to take possession of a police station at Kusawgu in the Central Gonja District built by the assembly because the district failed to connect electricity to the station. Assistant Commissioner of Police Angwubutoge Awuni, the Northern Regional Police Commander, on Wednesday refused to take over the building.

The assembly was to hand over the block to the Regional Command on Wednesday but Mr Awuni, who was to receive keys to the block, declined to do so because the police personnel would not be allowed to stay there without electricity.

“I will not stay in a place where there is no light especially a situation where the town is connected to electricity. If the assembly wants security then they have to think about the welfare of the security personnel,” he said.

He has therefore put on hold some transfers that he made for some six police officers to be posted to the new station and said the command would accept to occupy the building anytime electricity is connected. Mr Awuni appealed to chiefs to play useful roles in ensuring that there was peace in the Northern Region.

“My heart beats anytime I hear the amount being used to maintain peace in the region while our educational and health institutions need attention.”

He said he is a son of the north and stressed the need for all northerners to rally behind the Northern Regional Police Command under his supervision to ensure that there is lasting peace for development to replace conflicts.

Mr. Issifu Salisu Be-Awuribe, District Chief Executive, told the inconvenience created.

He requested Volta River Authority officials in the district to furnish the assembly with estimates for connecting power to the station. The new police station is to replace the Town Council Hall that the police is temporally occupying ever since some chieftaincy problems were created about three years ago.
