Global economic recession is no excuse to engage in vices

Kumasi, May 22, GNA – A traditional ruler has cautioned the youth to adhere to the principle of self-discipline and have the will power to overcome the challenges confronting them in the wake of the global economic recession.

Nana Araba Otual II, Queen of Mankessim Traditional Area and patron of all African Students Union, who made the call, said the economic crisis should not be used by the youth as an excuse to resort to foul means of getting money or engage in malpractices and vices that could hamper their career development. She was addressing students of the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School as part of her visit to some selected schools in Kumasi on Thursday.

The Queen earlier visited Angel Educational Complex, Prempeh College and Opoku Ware Senior High School.

The visit, among others, aimed at getting the students to understand the challenges that confront them following the global economic crisis.

Nana Otual II entreated parents to strive to wake up to their responsibilities and do away with spending lavishly instead of investing in their children’s education. They should also collaborate with teachers in monitoring their wards’ academic performance to ensure their proper upbringing and career development. She challenged teachers to uphold the code of ethics of their profession in the interest of nation building whilst retaining their image. Mrs. Mary Owusu Yeboah, Assistant Headmistress of Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School, thanked the patron for the visit, saying her achievements in the academic field would help motivate the students to strive for excellence in their endeavours.
