Activities to mark Ghana’s Independence Day begins on Monday

Activities marking the 44th Independence anniversary begin on Monday, February 26 with the hoisting of national flags and display of buntings.

A statement issued by the Information Services Department in Accra on Friday said there will be a parade of veterans on Wednesday to mark the anniversary of the 1948, 28th February Crossroads Shooting incident.

On Thursday, March 1, there will be a special national women’s forum at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, the finals of Independence day national schools debate at the Teachers’ Hall and the Annual Thompson Choral Music Festival at the Centre for National Development.

The statement said there would be Muslim prayers on Friday, March 2 and a non-denominational church service on Sunday, March 5.

It said a military Open Day would be held on Saturday, March 5 in all garrisons and military bases, including air and sea experiences for school children.

The statement said President John Agyekum Kufuor will present awards to the 20 overall best students and winners of the national schools debate contest at the forecourt of the State House on March 5.

On the same day, the national honours and awards committee will announce the Independence Day Honours list and a re-enactment of the declaration of independence at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

A parade of security services and school children will be held at the Independence Square on March 6 to climax the celebrations and the president will deliver the anniversary address. Similar parades will be held at regional and district capitals.
