Support girls’ education – Churches, NGOs urged

Nkoranza (B/A) May 11, GNA – Miss Agartha Osei, the Nkoranza District Girls’ Education Officer, has appealed to NGOs, philanthropists and religious bodies to support girls’ education in the district. She said parental neglect and support for girls’ education had contributed to a high number of school dropouts at the basic level. Ms. Osei told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza that the major challenge facing girls’ education in the area was the refusal of parents to provide their girls with their basic needs, which made unhappy at school.

The district girls’ education officer said even though she had advised some teenage mothers and school dropouts to enrol in school again, “the problems of most of them have not been solved as they have no one to support them in their education.” Ms. Osei expressed concern that the district assembly had not arranged for funds to support girls’ education and appealed to other public-spirited organisations to support in that direction. She paid glowing tribute to Okatakyie Agyeman Kodom VI, Omanhene of Nkoranza, for establishing an education endowment fund to support the youth in the area. Ms. Osei said about 13 girls had benefited from the fund and expressed gratitude to Mr. Kwame Ampofo-Twumasi, MP, for his support for girls’ education in the area.
