Youth advised against illegal migration

Nkoranza (B/A), March 24, GNA – Madam Barbara Dabi, National Programme Officer of International Organisation for Migration, an Accra-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), expressed regret about deaths of some youth through illegal migration. He said “Nobody is stopping you from travelling outside Ghana to seek fortune but you need to obtain relevant travelling documents such as passports and visas so that you can enjoy a peaceful journey”. She was speaking at a two-day workshop to educate about 35 citizens from Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region, who have returned from Libya on the risks involved in illegal migration. Madam Dabi said that the NGO had launched a project dubbed “Facilitating a Coherent Migration Management Approach in Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Libya” in collaboration with the European Commission (EC) and the Italian government. She said the project sought to build the capacity of government institutions concerned with labour migration to ensure legal migration of the youth.

Madam Dabi said that the NGO would educate the youth in the Brong-Ahafo on how to undertake legal migration. Mr. Kojo Wilmot, an official of the NGO, cautioned the youth against travelling by the Sahara Desert or high seas to foreign lands without valid travelling documents. Reverend Frank Peprah Twumasi, Chief Executive Officer of Scholars In-Transit, an NGO, expressed concern about the usage of Nkoranza as a transit to Libya illegally. He called on the youth to take their education seriously to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge for employment.
