Kumasi, March 10, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide for a general frame work for co-operation between the two institutions in the areas of training of health professionals.
The agreement would further seek to promote mutual understanding and expand scholarly and clinical ties among both parties for the promotion of scientific knowledge and provision of world class health services to patients to benefit the nation. Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST initialled on behalf of the University whilst Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Chief Executive of KATH signed for the Hospital.
The Vice-Chancellor said, among the terms of agreement, KNUST would provide personnel who would be engaged in teaching, research and service and also consider qualified service providers from KATH for appointment as adjunct lecturers.
The University, he said, would also allow KATH representation on the Board of the College of Health Sciences of KNUST and the College Appointments and Promotions Committee on matters that may be of mutual interest, hoping that such arrangements would ensure free flow of information between the two institutions. Dr. Nsiah-Asare pointed out that since his outfit became a Teaching Hospital in 1975 over 900 doctors have since been trained and that in recent years it had also provided facilities for the training of undergraduate nurses, medical laboratory technologists, pharmacists and sports and exercise scientists.
He said under the dual responsibilities of KNUST and KATH under the MoU, there shall be mutual recognition of the laws, statutes and processes governing both institutions.
There shall also be procedures for implementing disciplinary rules which would in the long term be synchronized to make them acceptable to both institutions, whilst the two institutions would also collaborate in the recruitment and development of personnel. Dr. Nsiah Asare stated that in pursuance of the above terms of agreement, staff offering services to both institutions would also sign honorary contracts granting them the right to teach and provide service at the relevant institution.
