Karaga (NR), March 7, GNA – The Ghanaian Danish Communities Programme (GDCP), Tamale-based, non-governmental organisation (NGO), engaging in capacity-building and community development programmes, had trained 50 youth from Karaga District, in the Northern Region, in various skills.
The pilot project, sought to integrate the beneficiaries, consisting 30 girls, withdrawn from portage, popularly known as (Kayayee), and 20 street boys, into the society. They were trained in hair dressing, sewing, catering, carpentry, masonry, batik and tire and dye making.
Tools for Self Reliance (TSR), a UK-based NGO, supported the programme with GH¢24,000, part of which was used to purchase equipment for the beneficiaries to start work with.
Mr. Haruna Huseini Sulemana, Executive Committee Chairman of GDCP, presenting the equipment to the beneficiaries at a graduation ceremony at Karaga on Wednesday, called on other NGOs and donor partners to mobilize resources to support the integration of Kayayee into the society.
He said apart from giving the beneficiaries tools to commence work with, the NGO had attached them to qualified artisans in the district to help sharpen their skills.
Mr. Sulemana said GDCP was paying GH A220 monthly to each of the artisans.
He commended the Karaga District Assembly for supporting GDCP in the training, which he said would be replicated through out the district.
