Accra, March 6, GNA – The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) on Friday called on the Ghanaian men to unite with the women to end violence against women and girls. “A society in which men are not willing to extend human rights to their female counterparts, is a society in which men are unwilling to extend human rights to men of another family,.. language, religion, race, ethnic tradition or nation”.
This was contained in a statement released in Accra by the CHRAJ and signed by its Acting Commissioner, Ms. Anna Bossman to commend Ghanaian women for their commitment and contribution to the nation’s development on the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The statement said many horrendous human rights abuses including rape, sexual harassment, domestic violence and other forms of discrimination which affected mental and physical development of women continued to be inflicted on them.
It said unless serious or fatal injuries occurred, domestic violence was by and large accepted as a normal aspect of private life by men and women alike and not seen as a serious violation warranting public intervention. It called on the government to ensure that stronger punishment was meted out to perpetrators to signal that the Ghanaian society did not and would not tolerate such violence acts against women and girls. It said the Ghanaian women had excelled in various spheres of development and that many more of them were capable of giving their best to the country if the opportunities were offered them.
