GES to deal with heads who team up with absentee teachers

Winneba (C/R) Feb. 27, GNA – The Ghana Education Service (GES) said head teachers who teamed up with teachers to receive their salaries even though they were not at post would be dealt with. “Circuit supervisors who sit in their offices and generate reports which do not reflect situations on the ground are a disgrace to the profession”.

Ms Benedict Nana Biney, Deputy Director General of the GES said this at the 8th Effutu Municipal Best Teacher Awards Ceremony in Winneba, during which 16 teachers and three non-teaching staff were awarded.

She said such officials were the very people who contributed to the sinking image of the profession. Such teachers, instead of rewarding them must rather face the disciplinary committee for the appropriate sanction to be meted out to them, she said. She said; “We empower the District Education Director to do everything humanely possible to prevent further sinking of the image of the teacher in this district”. Ms Biney implored teachers to acknowledge that the teaching profession was a noble one and that they must take pride in being a staff of GES.

She urged them to maintain high professionalism to improve the standards of the service. “As educators, we must understand children’s needs and create both social and academic experiences that will motivate learning by tapping into developmental needs and information level of children,” she said. Ms Biney said teachers were doing their part, and parents must complement their efforts through motivation so that quality education could be achieved. 27 Feb. 09
