Casual labourer convicted for attempting to stow away

Sekondi, Jan. 20, GNA – George Kojo Appoh, an 18-year casual labourer, was on Monday convicted of attempting to stow away by a Sekondi District Magistrate’s Court. The court remanded the accused, who pleaded guilty, to re-appear on January 26 for sentence.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Albert Deletsa said the accused was a dock labourer at the Takoradi Port and on October 29 last year he and his colleagues were booked to work on board MV Maersk Needham, a foreign vessel, at the port. The accused sneaked into the hatch of the vessel in the course of the work and the vessel left for Spain after loading.

On November 1, the accused was seen on board the ship, was arrested when he tried to disembark in Spain, was brought back to the Takoradi Port and handed over to the police.
