Ex- convict gets eight years for breaking into lecturer’s room

Accra Jan. 9, GNA – A 27-year-old ex-convict who broke into the bedroom of a lecturer to steal two laptop computers and chargers, pen drives and a mobile phone was on Friday sentenced to eight years imprisonment by a Circuit Court in Accra.

Charles Selormey charged with unlawful entry and stealing pleaded guilty. Selormey told the court that his girlfriend was pregnant and needed money to take care of her.

The court however, rejected his explanation and convicted him accordingly.

The prosecutor Chief Inspector Ben Darfuor told the court, presided over by Mrs Ivy Heward-Mills that the complainant was Professor Kodjo Senah, lecturer of the University of Ghana, Legon.

Prosecution said accused who is the step son to the complainant used to stay in the same bungalow but was sacked due to his criminal activities. On December 14 last year at about 0830, Prof. Senah and his wife locked up their bedroom and left for church leaving their houseboy and security men at post.

Prosecution said as soon as the couple left the house, Selormey sneaked into their bungalow and broke into the bedroom though the window and stole two Dell laptop computers, a mouse, two computer chargers, three pen drives, one pocket knife all valued GH 2,942 cedis. At about 1100 the same day, the couple retuned home and detected the items had been stolen. A report was therefore made to the Police and on December 15, last year, at about 4:00pm, acting on a tip off, Selormey was arrested at Tudu, Accra while he was offering the stolen items for sale.
