Asamoah Boateng to Challenge Election Result

The Information and National Orientation Minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng has served notice he will challenge the result of last Sunday’s parliamentary election in his constituency in court.

The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West is said to have lost by some 3176 of valid votes cast.

Mr Asamoah Boateng, popularly called Asa-Bee, on the ticket of the NPP polled 22,236 of valid votes cast while his contender, Aquinas Quansah, on the ticket of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) obtained 25,412 of total valid votes cast to secure the constituency’s parliamentary seat.

But speaking to Joy FM on Thursday, Mr Asamoah Boateng said “the figures are not real.” He said aside reports that ballot papers from some polling stations in the constituency were not counted, his agents had strong beliefs that the entire collation process “was compromised.” Asked what his feeling would be in the event that his application is not given a hearing, he said he would deem it “normal, may be the other person was more organised than you are.”

He however emphasised that he had supported his people and a rejection now would be big surprise to him. “Everything you would ask of an MP I provided; I’ve been an advocate for them,” he said. The minister seeks a court declaration, perhaps, for a recount or another round of polling in the constituency.
