Rawlings Pardons Pianim

The out-going president of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, has pardoned an old political foe who had been convicted of treason against his government in 1982.

His former opponent, Kwame Pianim, had served ten years of a twenty-year prison sentence.

Mr Pianim tried to run for president against Mr Rawlings in 1996, but the Supreme Court ruled that he was ineligible because he had been convicted of treason.
