FDB warns against dangerous baby teething mixture

Accra, Nov. 28, GNA – The Food and Drugs Board on Friday warned against the use of a baby teething mixture called “My Pikin Syrup” produced by Barewa Pharmaceuticals of Nigeria that has been found to be contaminated with diethylene glycol.

A statement by FDB said information it had receive from National Agency for food and Drugs Administration in Nigeria said the teething mixture, with Batch Number 02008, had resulted in the death of at least 29 babies in Nigeria.

FDB said post-market surveillance it had conducted had indicated the absence of the product on the Ghanaian market. “The Board, however, wishes to inform all importers, wholesalers, retailers and the general public to avoid patronising this product and report to the Board any part of the country.” FDB assured the public that it was monitoring events and putting in the necessary regulatory measures to ensure public safety. 28 Nov. 08
