ANYASCO celebrates first speech and prize day

Anyako, Oct 27, GNA- The Guidance and Counselling units in schools have been implored to help create liberal environments on their campuses to enable students air their grievances freely.

Mrs Angelina Baiden Amissah, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and sports, who made the call noted that such an environment would enable Students’ Representative Councils (SRCs) to assist in curbing unnecessary students’ disturbances and their destructive consequences. Addressing the maiden speech and prize giving day of the Anlo Awomefia Senior High School (ANYASCO) at the weekend at Anyako, she appealed to students and communities to protect school property. The ceremony was on the theme; “Infrastructure Development- A Tool for Quality Education”.

Mrs said though there was more to be done in terms of infrastructure development for many schools, budgetary limitations remained the biggest bottleneck.

She observed that despite the serious infrastructure constraints faced by ANYASCO, it performed very well in examinations. She promised that government would assist the school soon. Mr Edward Sosa, Headmaster, said the school which started as a community one in a clay building inherited from the middle school system, was now in a bad shape.

It has only nine rooms including one used for administration, a library and a Headmaster’s office.

Mr Sosa said the school which was absolved into the public system in 1994 has a population of 452 and had chalked 100 percent success in the West African Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the past five years.

Mr Sosa appealed for public support to rehabilitate the school, whilst they awaited government’s intervention.

Mr Raymond Okudzeto, President of the Volta Foundation, an NGO appealed to well-endowed people from the area to support the school to expand its infrastructure base to enable the youth of the area, who cannot afford higher education far away from their home area, to also attend college.
