Power outages due to contingencies – VRA

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA – The Volta River Authority (VRA) on Monday said the power outages which occurred in the country over the weekend were due to a series of contingencies experienced on its transmission system.

A statement signed by Ms Abla Fiadjoe, Director of Corporate Services of the VRA, said the outages that occurred were not indicative of electricity supply shortfalls or load shedding by the VRA.

The statement said on Saturday, when the Ghana Grid Company’s (GRIDCo) maintenance personnel took out the Nkawkaw-Kumasi transmission lines to carry out routine maintenance works, a fault occurred on the Akwatia-New Obuasi lines, causing power surges at various locations along the transmission lines which resulted in the loss of supply. It said another surge occurred at Tema, which subsequently affected supply to parts of Accra and Tema.

The statement reiterated the commitment of VRA and GRIDCo to provide reliable and adequate electricity to meet the country’s current energy needs, and also employing measures to minimize the impact of these system disturbances.
