Takoradi The Western Regional Minister, Mrs Esther Lily Nkansah, has called on workers to change their attitude to work and stop worrying about the government’s privatisation policy. She explained that privatisation does not necessarily mean laying off workers but it means to re-organizing the institutions to make them increase productivity and profit to improve the welfare of workers. Mrs Nkansah was addressing workers of the Ghana Railway Corporation (GRC) as part of her familiarisation tour of some selected establishments in Takoradi yesterday. She pointed out that the privatisation policy has become necessary because over the years, most workers have regarded Government establishments as places where hard work, punctuality and dedication to duty are not needed. As a result, many workers resorted to absenteeism, malingering, lateness and pilfering while good care was not taken of Government property. This is against the background of the Government sinking several millions of cedis into the rehabilitation of buildings, equipment and the payment of salaries. The Regional Minister noted that private organisations are better
run to make profit stressing that to make Government establishments profitable, it has to stop spoon-feeding them by withdrawing support.
