Police boss confirms mysterious death of driver

Mr Peter Nanfuri, Inspector General of Police, has confirmed the death of the driver whose vehicle was reported to have caused an accident involving the presidential convoy in which four soldiers died last month on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

According to Mr Nanfuri, Daniel Dawutey Chakitey, driver of the Urvan mini-bus, which allegedly caused the accident, fell ill a few days ago and was admitted at the Police Hospital where he died. He said a post-mortem examination would be conducted on the body to find out the cause of death. He however cautioned that “if the doctors who were treating him know the cause of his death, then there would be no need for the examination”. Chakitey, who was standing trial with his mate for manslaughter, allegedly crossed the presidential convoy without any signal, resulting in the accident.

Four presidential guards, namely, Corporal Kwame Boateng, Corporal Kwabena Aboagye, Lance Corporal Kweku Ewun-Tohma and Lance Corporal Martin Kumashie, died in the accident.
