The Ghana Auctioneers Association said on Sunday that over-aged vehicles that have been confiscated by the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service should be auctioned to scrap dealers.
This should be on condition that those who buy them shall not be allowed to register those vehicles, but would dismantle and sell them as spare parts. A letter to the Minister of Finance signed by Mr S.A.S. George said such a measure would save the government huge sums of money needed to melt them.
It said the government will also make money from the auction of those vehicles and owners of vehicles could buy those parts. The government in 1998 passed a law that prevents the import of vehicles older than 10 years.
All such vehicles are confiscated to the state but only a handful of them have been melted because of the high cost involved. Such vehicles are wasting away as they have been exposed to the weather.
“The Ghana Auctioneers Association appeals to the Honorable Minister to entrust the auction sales of those vehicles to the association which has the professional men licensed to dispose of the items,” it said
