NGOs URGED TO LINK UP WITH SCIENTISTS

Non governmental organisations in the West African sub region have been urged to provide effective linkages between scientists , policy makers and the communities to ensure sustainable production and consumption of natural resources. Enu-Kwesi, member of the council of state who made the call , further urged them to complement governments’ efforts by mobilising additional resources for both development and environmental enrichment programmes. Dr. Enu-Kwesi was speaking at the opening of a five-day international conference on sustainable production and consumption of natural resources in Accra yesterday. The conference which is being organised by Friends of the Earth ,m Ghana under he sponsorship of the Commonwealth Foundation and the Netherlands Embassy in Ghana is aimed at developing a vision for sustainable production and consumption of natural resources in West Africa. It is being attended by 65 policy makers, representatives of NGOs and the business community in West Africa, district assemblies as well as three participants from America and the Netherlands. Dr. Elizabeth Acheampong, Senior Lecturer, Department of Botany, University of Ghana, Legon who chaired the function, called for the need to formulate sub-regional strategies to ensure sustainable production and consumption of natural resources.

In a welcoming address Mr. Theo Anderson, Director, Friends of the Earth , Ghana, said the conference will discuss exhaustively implications which will riseof the deliberations of the conference to formulate appropriate strategies for sustainable production and consumption of natural resources.
