Wemfie JHS students boycott free extra tuition programme

Wamfie (B/A), Aug. 13, GNA – Junior High School students at Wemfie, Dormaa-East District, have boycotted without reason(s), a free special afternoon class under the auspices of the Wamfie Rural Bank.

The Bank’s General Manager, Mr Yaw Benneh, who announced this during a forum held by the bank for its customers at Wamfie, described as disappointing the behaviour of students.

He said the bank deemed it prudent to contribute its widow’s mite to the growth of education in the Wamfie community and therefore rolled out the programme under which it engaged the services of teachers and paid them to provide the extra tuition. “All that the bank expected from the students was to sacrifice a minimum of two hours after their usual classes to assimilate additional knowledge. “This demand they felt was too huge a task for children of their age,” Mr Benneh said. He also described as surprising the indifferent attitude of their parents and guardians towards the whole programme. Mr Benneh noted that the bank’s aim was to complement government’s efforts towards educating children. He, therefore, appealed to the parents to re-consider their stance by pondering over the future of their wards’ education and the little sacrifice being required of them. The Dormaa-Ahenkro Branch Manager of the bank, Mr Hayford Amponsah, in-charge of the extra tuition project, described the unexpected behaviour put up by the kids as unprecedented and discouraging. He said the bank was still determined to assist them and that if all attempts should prove futile, then the project would have to be shifted to another community where the bank operates.
