Koforidua, Aug.5, GNA- The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, The Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle has expressed concern about the rate at which Ghanaian youth are loosing interest in their culture. He therefore called for pragmatic efforts from all stakeholders to save the country’s culture from sinking in the face of the threat from Western culture.
Archbishop Palmer- Buckle expressed the concerned when he opened the 10th Bishop Palmer- Buckle annual vacation camp organised by the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Koforidua on Monday. The camp was initiated by CNC in collaboration with the Archbishop in 1998 when he was the Bishop of the Koforidua Catholic Diocese. It was aimed at bringing school children from the basic level together in order to learn some aspects of the Ghanaian culture and other basic things.
Archbishop Palmer-Buckle said Ghana had a very rich culture which could be developed to generate income to support the nation’s economy. He urged CNC to educate Ghanaians on the importance of culture in order to discard some negative perceptions people have about it. The Archbishop urged parents to consider their children as the greatest assets that could not be exchanged for any other thing and provide them all their basic needs. He cautioned the children against social vices such as drug abuse, stealing and alcoholism, which could destroy their potentials.
Mr Kinsley Obeng, Regional Director of CNC, called on the children to search through their minds in order to understand and know their future. He said this was the only way they could appreciate their God given talent and develop their self esteem and aspire for perfection, professional aptitude and competence. Mr Obeng commended the Archbishop for his interest in culture and urged other religious leaders to emulate the example.
