500,000 communities enjoy power under SHEP

The government under the Self-Help Electrification Project (SHEP) has extended electricity to 500,000 communities nation-wide within the last 10 years, Dr Joseph Oteng-Agyei, Director of Energy, Ministry of Mines and Energy, said on Thursday.

Dr Oteng-Agyei, who is the NDC parliamentary candidate for Bosomtwi, said as at 1990 only 428 towns and villages in the country enjoyed power supply.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a fan club formed by his admirers in the constituency at Jachie.

The NDC parliamentary candidate said the country has witnessed tremendous progress under the NDC government and asked the electorate to renew its mandate, come December 7.

Dr Oteng-Agyei advised the party’s supporters to exercise maximum restraint even in the face of provocation during the electioneering campaign to prevent the country from sliding into confusion and chaos.

He said it is important for all to be disciplined and tolerant of their opponents to promote the growth of Ghana’s democracy.

Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Minister in charge of State Protocol and Chieftaincy Affairs, told the people not to repeat the mistake they made in the 1996 elections when they voted against Dr Oteng-Agyei.
